A Canadian aboriginal community of 2,000 people in Ontario has declared a state of emergency after dozens of its members attempted suicide. At least 11 members of the Attawapiskat First Nation tried to take their lives at the beginning of April, and another 28 tried to do so in March. Federal Minister of Health Jane Philpott is mobilizing a response team. (SOUNDBITE) (English) FEDERAL MINISTER OF HEALTH, JANE PHILPOTT, SAYING: "We are putting in place a number of immediate measures to be able to address the problem. There are, as of today, there are two additional mental health workers from Health Canada who have been sent into the community." But New Democrat member of parliament Charlie Angus says the government has done too little, too late. (SOUNDBITE) (English) NEW DEMOCRAT MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT, CHARLIE ANGUS, SAYING: "If these were non-aboriginal children, all the resources would be in their schools. When they're aboriginal children, well hey, you can take a number and stand in line. And meanwhile, kids are dying every day." Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has called the news "heartbreaking" and says Canada will work to help indigenous peoples who make up 4 percent of the country's population.
