Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell dead at 52

U.S. musician Chris Cornell, who gained fame as the lead singer of Soundgarden and later Audioslave, died on Wednesday in Detroit, his representative said. Scarlett Cvitanovich reports.

U.S. musician Chris Cornell dead at the age of 52. The Soundgarden and Audioslave frontman dying late Wednesday (May 17) following a performance in Detroit. The circumstances of his death aren't yet known. His representative says Cornell's family will work closely with the medical examiner to determine the cause. Cornell was a key figure to emerge out of the Seattle grunge scene, forming Soundgarden in 1984. The band was arguably the first in the area to sign with a major label. Two years before Nirvana's "Never Mind" was released. Cornell's distinctive voice - he had a four-octave range - propelled a string of rock radio smashes including "Spoonman" and "Black Hole Sun."
