(Adds information from state)

NEW YORK, Sept 7 (Reuters) - Colorado plans to submit a formal bid on behalf of the Denver metropolitan area for Inc to open its second headquarters, a state official told Reuters on Thursday.

Amazon said earlier in the day it would build a $5 billion second headquarters in North America, kicking off a competition between cities and states to offer tax cuts and other incentives that could bring 50,000 new jobs.

The state has reached out to Amazon but has not yet held any meetings with the company regarding the opportunity, said Michelle Hadwiger, director of global business development for the state's Office of Economic Development and International Trade.

"We just reached out letting them know we wanted to have a thoughtful, intentional and coordinated response as a state and be respectful of their process and that we intend to compete for the opportunity," Hadwiger said.

Hadwiger said Colorado has a "close relationship" with Amazon, adding the company within the last eight months announced plans for a distribution center and an automation center in the state. (Reporting by Stephanie Kelly; Editing by Daniel Bases and Jonathan Oatis)
