Lufthansa, Austrian to restart flights to Erbil after airspace opened

BERLIN, March 23 (Reuters) - Lufthansa and its Austrian Airlines unit will restart flights to Erbil in Iraq's Kurdistan region from Monday after restrictions on airspace were lifted, the airlines said on Friday.

International flights to Erbil were halted at the end of September in retaliation for the Kurdistan region's vote on independence.

Iraq earlier this month said airports in the region would be reopened to international traffic, while Turkey's Prime Minister on Friday said it would also open its airspace to flights to and from Erbil.

Austrian Airlines is set to operate every day between Vienna and Erbil, starting on Monday, March 26, while Lufthansa plans to fly between Frankfurt and Erbil on Tuesdays and Saturdays, with its first operation on Tuesday, March 27. (Reporting by Victoria Bryan Editing by Ludwig Burger)
